Feline Immune Disorders Caused by Viruses

A feline's immune system consists of a network of antibodies, white blood cells, and other substances that identify and fight off infection and foreign proteins. This amazing system is the body's protective security guard always ready to arrest any foreign or dangerous substance that might be bold enough to try to break in. Some of the substances that are constantly being arrested are bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and the always dangerous but less often seen cancer cells. But on occasion an invader can sneak through the body's defenses.

But what can go wrong?

Even the best defense mechanism can sometimes run amuck. The three most common areas of feline immune disorder are:

*When the body recognizes itself as the problem; an autoimmune disorder

*When the body's defense mechanism is too weak to produce the needed response

*When the body's appropriate response to foreign antigens damages normal tissue; an allergic reaction

*Parvovirus (Parvo): When a feline falls prey to the parvovirus they experience a dangerous short term reduction in the number of neutrophils and in the lymphocyte responsiveness. This breakdown in the body's natural defense mechanism opens the door for fungal infections such as candidiasis, aspergillosis, and mucormycosis.

*Feline leukemia virus: Feline leukemia is a deadly autoimmune disorder similar to the human immunodeficiency virus. Despite the widespread use of vaccines this punitive disease remains one of the most often seen causes of death and illness in cats. It causes a variety of cancers. Persistent infection can also lead to severe suppression of the immune system and severe anemia. In the United States approximately 2% of healthy stray urban cats have the virus; this number is much higher in sick or immune compromised cats.

*Feline immunodeficiency virus: This type of feline immune disorder is primarily spread through biting and is most often seen in males or older cats. This aggressive virus attacks the body's defense system leading to anemia and low white blood cell counts, cancer, gum disease, or nerve disorders. Shortly after becoming infected felines experience symptoms which present themselves as fever and enlargement of the lymph nodes. Over time the visible symptoms disappear but the virus remains forever. Most cats eventually experience a reduction in immune function leading to an increased risk of illness.

In summary, feline immune disorders that are viral are serious conditions that are difficult and at sometimes impossible to cure. The intensity of the infection can range from mild to very serious. For those of you who have experienced any of the above conditions first hand you know how frustrating and ultimately heartbreaking they can be.

Additionally, many cat owners are adopting a regime consisting of natural herbal remedies for immune health and exercise as a way of strengthening their feline's disease defense mechanism. The recipe combined with the helpful advice from your veterinarian could be a valuable combination in both preventing and overcoming feline immune disorder caused by viruses.
